Reflection discussion: Search the internet for a four moments of Hand Hygiene poster that you feel explains it the best and could be used in your workplace. Explain why you chose the poster.
I chose this poster because it is practical and visually clear, which makes it useful in a busy clinical setting. It does not overload staff with too much information and focuses on exactly when hand hygiene is required. The wording is straightforward, and the layout helps staff connect actions to patient safety. It would work well in my workplace because it reinforces consistent practice and can be easily placed at the point of care as a reminder for staff to clean their hands at the right times.
Hi Ochuko Bridget,
I like the poster you chose because it is clear, easy to read, and very practical for everyday use. I agree that a hand hygiene poster should not overload staff with too much information, especially in a busy care environment. In long-term care, a simple reminder like this is very helpful because staff are providing frequent direct care to residents throughout the shift. Your point about placing it at the point of care is also very important because it helps staff remember the right moments for hand hygiene and supports resident safety.
Hi Bridget,
I really like the simplicity of the poster you chose, as the pictures clearly show each moment of hand hygiene for staff before they enter a patient’s room, if they need a reminder. Likewise, I like that there was a video included for people who visit this website, because it is a good way to show how microorganisms are spread if the four moments of hand hygiene are not properly implemented. Thanks for sharing ~Melissa
For this discussion, I chose Public Health Ontario’s “Your 4 Moments for Hand Hygiene” poster from the Just Clean Your Hands program. Public Health Ontario includes this poster as part of its hand hygiene resources, and Ontario guidance for long-term care also uses the Four Moments of Hand Hygiene as a key part of infection prevention and control.
I chose this poster because it is clear, simple, and practical for a long-term care setting. It reminds staff exactly when hand hygiene is needed, such as before resident contact, before a clean or aseptic procedure, after body fluid exposure risk, and after resident or resident-environment contact. These moments are especially important in long-term care because residents are often older, may have chronic illnesses, and are more vulnerable to infection.
This poster would work well in my workplace because it can be placed at the point of care and serves as a quick visual reminder for staff during busy shifts. Public Health Ontario’s hand hygiene materials are designed for health care settings, including long-term care homes, and the guidance emphasizes that easy access to hand hygiene products at the point of care helps health care providers perform hand hygiene at the required moments.

I chose this poster because it is by Public Health Ontario, and they did a great job at clearly presenting the four moments of hand hygiene. As well, it is eye-catching and easy for people to understand. For example, the poster outlines each step with a picture for visual learners, along with written instructions for those who prefer to read to learn. Moreover, when posted in healthcare facilities, it reminds staff of the importance of proper hand hygiene to prevent the transmission of healthcare-associated infections among patients and within the environment.

Hi Mellisa, I agree with you because it’s widely used across all healthcare setting in Ontario, it also aligns with provincial IPAC guidelines, making it both credible and immediately applicable in a workplace setting.
Great selection of posters everyone! I am curious, does anyone have printed off and perhaps laminated and on your lanyards at work a 4-moments card? I have seen that some workplaces add this to their tags, along with common codes and other various “high use” info sets. Is this something you have? Do you think cards like this are helpful?

I chose this poster as it is a clear, simple visual for not only staff as a reminder but even visitors as well. It connects the 4 moments with the reasons as to why it’s important to perform hand hygiene in those moments. We have something similar at our work as well, in the fast paced environment that we’re in it’s best to have a simple, visual reminder to reinforce and remind everyone of its importance in infection prevention.
