Activity 2: You have drafted an email communication to your manager. For activity 2 – write about your decision to send or to not send your email to your manager/supervisor/director. Why did you send (or not send) the email? If you sent the email, how was it received? Would you make any changes to the communication in the future? (150 words maximum)
I did not send my SBAR email to my supervisor. This is because I was on a temporary placement at the relevant facility that has now ended. In the future, I would hope that I work at a facility that is enthusiastic about process changes if they will improve patient outcomes. I was satisfied with my SBAR communication in my unsent email. I am a novice nurse (still in nursing school) and I will be learning how to improve my SBAR communication throughout my entire career as I strive to constantly improve my practice.
Thank you,
Rachel
Good afternoon Rachel,
Thanks for sharing, I have been a nurse for two years and I am still learning , as you know with nursing learning is never ending. As you continue through your career and you stated you get better. When I first started my nursing career I was so nervous and not so good at giving report but as time went on I got better. It’s a gradual process which eventually get’s better in which you will be able to mentor new nurses too.
Regards,
Maame
Hello everyone,
I sent my SBAR email to my nurse manager, it was recieved well. Firstly, I do have that open communication with my manager so me sending her this email was a breeze. My manager didschedul agree that some residents’ tolieting schedules need to be discussed and set in stone so everyone is onboard. She also agreed with the interventions and staff training in which she explained management is in the works of scheduling more staff training.
Thanks for listening.
I meant to say * My manager did agree that some residents’ tolieting schedules need to be discussed and set in stone so everyone is onboard.*
Hello Maame,
Greetings. Thank you for sharing about open communication. I have realized from practice that an environment in which open communication exists, thrives. Interestingly, this flows from the leader to the followers. Managers who allow for open communication have more cohesive and higher functioning teams. This allows for change ideas to be implemented seamlessly and excellently because everyone is aboard.
Hello everyone,
Yes, I did send my email to my nursing manager. I was comfortable doing so because the nursing manager had demonstrated over the years to be an individual of character, sincere, consistent, friendly, humble, open-minded and inclusive. The nursing manager is also an individual who is very passionate about how research and knowledge mobilization could be harnessed to create an enabling atmosphere for residents, nurses and PSWs to thrive. The email was well-received by my nursing manager who responded with a suggestion for an in-person meeting. Overall, I did try to communicate my research topic and recommendations as best as I could. Regardless, I will endeavor to work at improving my SBAR communication.
