Synopsis:
Interested in a career in operating room nursing? Learning more about operating room nursing as a career choice for RPNs, educational/practice requirements and what a day as an OR nurse looks like.
Speaker: Michelle Sparks RPN
Michelle Sparks graduated from Loyalist College in 1996 on the Dean’s List. She obtained her Operating Room Nursing with Honours from Humber College in 2001 as well as the RPN Operating Room Nursing Award for outstanding achievement. She began her career in the operating room at Humber River Regional Hospital, York Finch site in 2001. She has worked in Plastics, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, ENT, Cystoscopy, Gynecology, Urology, Dental, Thoracic, and Orthopedics. After six years there she moved to the Holland Orthopedic and Arthritic Center of Sunnybrook where she still works. She was part of the Intubation team at Sunnybrook during the first wave of COVID-19 and worked in the main OR at the Bayview site of Sunnybrook during the third wave. She has been training clinical placement students and orienting new hires, either RN or RPN, in the OR since 2002. She also works with Humber College Operating Room Nursing RN/RPN as a lab evaluator and facilitator to the students when they are in clinical placement since 2021.
She has been a member of WeRPN (RPNAO) since 2008 and part of the executive committee for the Operating Room Specialty Interest Group since 2010. She joined WeRPN in the spring of 2023 as part of the BEGIN team working as a case manager.
