I love this Kathleen! I also took this approach when training new RPNs and found most would appreciate the ‘safety net’ of my presence while also growing their own confidence in the task at hand. I can think of one new grad I worked with who would leave a particular dressing for me with various reasons why she did not do it. After the 3rd time and my seeing a pattern emerge, I spoke with her 1:1 basically stating I am happy to show her how to do the dressing and walk her through it a couple times but I am not ok completing her responsibilities. She admitted she did not have much experience in wound care but was afraid leadership would fire her if she brought this up. Once we did the dressing together a couple times she was amazing! I love that you also are empowering those you work with and helping them grow as well!
