I absolutely agree that there is a difference between being a Manager and being a Leader, and as mentioned before, an individual could be one or the other or both (I think ultimately we all hope our Manager is both!!) In my years of Nursing I have found the people I felt were great leaders were not in Management at all, but associates who inspired me to look beyond what is right in front of me, come up with creative solutions and inspire others as they inspired me. I recently took a Management Skills for Nurses course and can already see the differences between the 2 roles in just these 2 readings. In the Management course it was all very concrete, focused on laws, acts and basically “managing” people, whereas this course so far has already made me aware of the things that I do personally and professionally as both a leader and a follower.
