In my position in a retirement home, I am tasked with training UCPs to administer medications. I make sure to let them know that they can always come to me with any questions or concerns or if they need more training. I have no problem walking through the medication passes with them, with me right beside them for extra encouragement and support. I find that added support really does make a difference especially if a staff member is feeling anxious the first day that they are “alone” administering medication. I always tell them you are never alone, a nurse is always around to ask or if not physically in the building can be called. I always want to make sure staff know I am approachable at all times.
