I definitely feel Nurses learn by sharing stories, unfortunately I think we learn the most from the scary stories or the “what not to do” stories, those first or second hand accounts of things gone wrong and what happened. When orienting new staff to the unit I use stories to instill the importance of bedside shift reporting and always visualizing their patients before signing the ToA by telling them the story of a time I was getting report and the Nurse insisted the patient was fine and that I didn’t need to see them because “they had just checked them”, I proceeded to go into the room anyway and it turns out the patient had passed away. If I hadn’t gone to the room and just taken her word for it, it’s hard to say how long it would have taken me to get back there before I would have found her and at that time I would have been the most responsible Nurse, how do you answer the question last seen normal then?
