Nurses I feel do learn from sharing stories. One that comes to mind for me is during report. The nurse that was leaving stated that she had already done narcotic count with another staff member. I looked in the book and it wasn’t signed off. So I stated that we had to do narcotic count as the book wasn’t signed (guess the staff member forgot, or I don’t think count was done at all). During the count process I found two errors for narcotics that weren’t given. If we hadn’t done the count properly than I wouldn’t have found those errors. The medications were given once the errors were found. When I train new nurses on the floor I always remind them to double check the narcotic cards, and make sure you are doing count at the end of the shift with the incoming nurse. It was a learning tool for me that I have passed on to new hires.
