Hi Kathleen, great job following your instincts and having superb assessment skills! I once had a situation that had some similarities to what you shared; I had noticed one day during breakfast time that a resident’s left pupil was fixed and dilated, and that this was new, but another senior nurse did not agree with my assessment. I turned out to be right about what I had noticed and it being new and needing urgent attention, and so I was really glad to have stood by my assessment and personal knowledge of the resident. Following through with your “gut instincts” as a nurse really does save lives!
