In the past I used CNO’s therapeutic communication document to guide my practice during my consolidation placement. I worked in an outpatient endoscopy clinic where patients were often anxious, scared and sometimes even angry. I had difficulty communicating with such clients as I did not know what was the right thing to say or how to deliver what I wanted to say. After reviewing the therapeutic communication document on CNO’s website and having a conversation with my preceptor I found that I was better able to communicate with clients.

The nine entry to practice competencies outlined for Registered Nurses help new graduates better understand scope of practice. For example, the role of communicator outlines ways to foster and maintain professional and therapeutic relationships, and adequately share relevant information. In my final placement, I was able to utilize active listening to better understand client preferences. Specifically, one client was particular about receiving their medication at set times daily. By actively listening to the client’s request, I was able to build a therapeutic, trusting relationship with the client.

CNO resources were always a mainstay in all of my papers and projects in the bridging program. I was happy to use these documents as they were the most up to date and relevant documents that reflected expectations of nursing. Therapeutic communication and nurse-patient relationship were documents I frequented when finalizing care plans and reviewed the entry to practice documents when preparing for my NCLEX examination. I would always review CNO documents if I wanted the most accurate, professional, and relatable nursing information.

During all of my clinical opportunities, I would use CNO resources to help support my learning; they helped in my self-reflection practice at the end of day, and I used them to complete the required reports to my Clinical Supervisors and Preceptor. I therefore learned and practiced to adhere to the relevant CNO competencies such as professional practice, ethical practice, legal practice, foundations of practice and collaborative practice.

I have used CNO resources when completing a school assignment during semester 4. During semester 4 we had an assignment to create a power point presentation so we could teach our classmates about a topic in Nursing in the community. I was able to pull information to help us put together all of the correct information and we also provided links in the power point for the students to refer to.

As a new nurse, I was assigned to care for a patient with complex wound care needs. I turned to the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) resources for guidance to ensure I provided the best care possible.
I reviewed the CNO’s “Practice Standards” on wound care. This document provided detailed information on best practices, including assessment, documentation, and treatment protocols. It helped me understand the current standards and expectations for wound care management.

During my consolidation at the dementia unit of a long-term facility, I used the CNO practice standard on Therapeutic Nurse-Client Relationship to address a resident’s challenging behaviors. By applying the guidelines on empathy, effective communication and maintaining professional boundaries, I was able to understand the resident’s needs, deescalate potential aggressive behavior, and improve my interactions which enhance a safer and more positive atmosphere in the unit.

As a practical nursing student, I frequently used the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) resources to support my practice and learning. One specific example was during my clinical placement at the hospital in an inpatient unit, where I encountered a situation involving medication administration.

I was assigned to administer medications to several residents and wanted to ensure I adhered to the best practices and guidelines. I referred to the CNO’s practice standards and guidelines on medication administration. I carefully read through the sections on safe medication practices, including the principles of safe medication administration, the role and responsibility of the nurse, and the steps for handling various types of medications.

One example of when I used the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) resources to support my practice and learning was during my consolidation placement at the Canadian Mental Health Association in the Early Psychosis Intervention program. I was working on a case involving a young client who was experiencing their first episode of psychosis, and it was crucial to ensure that informed consent was obtained for the treatment plan we were developing.
To ensure that I was following the best practices and adhering to the legal and ethical standards, I referred to the CNO’s practice guideline on “Consent” which outlines the principles and requirements for obtaining informed consent in nursing practice. This guideline provided me with a clear understanding of the process, including the importance of explaining the nature of the treatment, the risks and benefits, and ensuring the client had the capacity to provide consent.
Using this resource, I was able to effectively communicate with the client and their family, ensuring they understood the treatment options and were comfortable with the proposed plan. This not only supported my learning by deepening my understanding of informed consent but also enhanced my practice by ensuring I was providing care that was ethical, legal, and centered around the client’s needs and preferences.

I have been using CNO resources as a one step guide for all the mandatory information required for nurses. Most recently, I used the Quality Assurance program of CNO to reflect on my pre-grad clinical practice. I used the QA learning plan to identify my learning needs, develop two learning goals and reflect on my practice as a nursing student. I had to link my learning goals with the Code of Conduct of CNO. I had briefly described my learning activities planned to complete to address my learning goals through out my pre-grad clinical. There was a final reflection on my learning plan and evaluate changes in my practice to achieve the goals. It has helped me to understand the importance of reflection in nursing career.

I have used the CNO resources throughout my schooling. I have found these resources very helpful when completing clinical journals and school assignments for referencing. I have also referred to the CNO throughout my nursing career. These resources provide clarity for the nursing profession.

During my clinical placement, I was assigned to provide care for a patient who required assistance with medication administration. To ensure I approached the task correctly, I referred to the CNO’s Medication Practice Standard to understand the responsibilities related to safe medication practices, including the “Three Checks” and “Ten Rights.”

The resource clarified my accountability, even as a nursing student, in verifying the medication, dose, and patient identity. Additionally, I reviewed the guidelines on documenting care and communicating with the healthcare team, which helped me confidently complete the task while aligning with professional standards.

Using the CNO resources reinforced my understanding of the importance of safe, ethical, and patient-centered care, which directly supported my learning and growth in clinical practice.

As a new nurse, I used the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Practice Standard for Documentation to improve how I documented patient care. I referred to the guidelines to ensure my notes were clear, accurate, and included all necessary information, like assessment findings, interventions, and follow-ups. This helped me meet the professional standards and provide safe, consistent care to my patients.

During my transition from an RPN to completing my RN education, I frequently utilized the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) resources to guide my practice and learning. One example was reviewing the Professional Standards, Revised 2002 document to better understand the expectations for decision-making and accountability as I prepared for a leadership role in nursing. This resource provided clarity on the responsibilities and scope of practice differences between RPNs and RNs, helping me critically analyze patient care scenarios and align my actions with professional expectations. The CNO’s practice guidelines reinforced my ability to deliver safe, ethical, and effective care while fostering confidence in my expanding role.
