Reflection discussion: Search the internet for a four moments of Hand Hygiene poster that you feel explains it the best and could be used in your workplace. Explain why you chose the poster.
This hand washing signage is placed in washrooms, dietary areas, it is simple with picture shows step by step for all languages, it is a good reference when washing hands, they ABHR is also a good reference.
Signage is also available and placed in clients rooms.
This poster clearly illustrates the importance of hand hygiene before contact with the patient or items around them. Before clean or aseptic procedures, e.g before giving medications. After exposure to body fluids, which includes cleaning up bodily fluids, and lastly, after touching a patient or items around them.
This poster is used in some homes where a resident has been transferred back to the facility after a procedure, and the HCP needs to do follow up e.g surgery.
I chose the Four Moments of Hand Hygiene poster because it is very clear and easy to understand for nurses working in a busy environment. The poster clearly shows when hand hygiene should be performed before and after patient contact and procedures. It is helpful because it reminds nurses to protect both patients and themselves from the spread of infection. This poster would be effective in my workplace because it is simple, visual, and easy to follow during daily nursing care.
Hi Rebekah Joy, I like the poster you chose as it is a quick tool to remind staff when the appropriate times are to use the 4 moments of hand hygiene. I also like how it gives examples for each moment as it helps to show in what way it is to be applied helping to clarify when each moment occurs throughout the work day.
I chose this poster not only because it’s clear and easy to follow, it also has pertinent information on when and why these moment occur, but also includes a 5th moment. The 5th moment in this poster is – after touching patient surroundings. This moment is often included in the 4th moment and is often missed.
Hi Kim,
I love the WHO 5 moments for hand hygiene you picked, because it helps break the chain of infection and protects both patients and staff. When a staff is consistent in hand hygienebefore and after patient contact is one of the simplest and most effective infection control practices.
Thank you Kimberly for highlighting the obvious advantage of this poster. It is very easy to forget the last moment of hand hygiene-after touching patient environment. Especially in Long Term Care homes where staff are caring for many residents, it is so easy to forget to practice the last moment of hand hygiene because one is busy rushing to care for the next resident.
I chose this poster because it clearly illustrates hand hygiene goals. It is very simple to understand and shows the four moments of hand hygiene using different colours, which helps guide the viewer in a logical sequence. It also ties all the moments of hand hygiene that a health care worker performs together by numbering them to show that hand hygiene must occur before, during, and after care. The final message connects the visuals to a system-wide safety goal.
I chose pic because it shows
1. Environmental transmission of microbes
2. Proper hand washing technique
This is a great poster. Not only does it include the 4 moments of hand hygiene but also shows proper handwashing technique. This serves as a great visual aid and can benefit anyone entering a health care setting.
I chose this image because it clearly identifies the WHY behind every moment of hand hygiene
I chose this poster because this is poster of 4 moments of hand hygiene shows the healthcare worker, patient zone, and environments, clearly identifying the 4 moments when hand hygiene must be performed to prevent the spread of infection.
Hi Svetlana
I really like your poster as it has really great visuals that clearly depicts each of the 4 moments of hand hygiene. This helps to really put into perspective for what they mean of when each moment occurs. It is also great because it does not require much time out of a staff members work day to read, as it is more visual than written allowing for easier/ faster comprehension of the message the poster is trying to deliver, this works well for a staff member who is quickly on the go and needs a quick reminder for when hand hygiene is needed.
Hello Svetlana
The diagram on your post reflects an example, noting the surfaces health care workers touch on a daily basis. Sometimes several times a day.
Audits depicting susceptible objects in a single resident’s rooms will differ from resident to resident
For example, a resident has c-diff and prefers to have meals in their rooms while reclined in a chair
The PSW will enter the resident’s room at least 3 times a day to deliver a meal tray
Meal trays are placed on an adjustable height table and positioned for the resident’s access
Frequent risk assessment and audits for PPE compliance by the IPAC lead are warranted
Health teaching to PSW’s and environmental staff ensures their knowledge c-diff can survive up to 5 months on surfaces
Further risk assessment may determine which staff person, time of day may be more susceptible for contamination spread
For example, environmental cleaning staff will enter a room once daily. Wearing PPE throughout the cleaning process they promote a less risk
PSW staff entering the room to deliver a hot meal tray, position the adjustable table for the resident is a higher risk.
Audits at meal time may reveal a PSW is less inclined to use routine practices since they’re quickly just delivering a meal tray
Thank you for your post 😊
This is a great poster to use. I think it clearly identifies the times for hand hygiene in an very quick to read poster. I think one way it could be improved is by including hand washing as well as using hand rub.
I agree with your choice, I also close this poster!! This poster does a great job of clearly showing the healthcare worker, the patient zone, and the surrounding environment, which helps make the four moments easier to understand. By visually identifying when hand hygiene is required, it reinforces how important it is in preventing the spread of infection. The clear layout makes it practical and effective for everyday use in healthcare settings.
I chose this image because it is minimal, background is clear of clutter and you are able to focus immediately on the message or instructions. The instructions are also in a step by step arrangement in a clockwise direction which also makes it easy to follow
Thank you Adeyemi for sharing this poster. You are absolutely right about this poster using simple visuals which allows for more focus on the message rather than being distracted by design/colors. It clearly explains the 4 moments of hand hygiene for daily nursing practice. The numbered arrows around the seated client show when hand hygiene is needed. The poster is simple, easy to understand and support evidence based nursing.
I chose this poster because it explains the reason behind each moment of hand hygiene making it easier for anyone (staff/visitors/volunteers)to understand. It also shows graphic making it easier for anyone to remember the four moments of hand hygiene.
This poster can be put up throughout the home to remind staff the four key moments for when hand hygiene is used. It is a great source as it breaks down each key moment of when it is used and explains the rational educating/reminding staff of the importance of completing hand hygiene.
I chose this poster as it provides the 4 key moments of hand hygiene as well as why it is important. This poster can be placed in any health care setting and can be beneficial for staff, visitors and residents.
This is very clear and concise, and it effectively explains the four moments of hand hygiene.
I picked this image because it is simple and eye-catching. I think the poster that I normally see is with the patient in the bed and while I think those ones are good, in long term care we interact with residents a lot outside of bed and it is important to remember to complete hand hygiene at all times including feeding, toileting, medication passes etc while the resident is out of bed.
I think this is a good poster because it clearly shows the four moments of hand hygiene in a simple, organized way. Each moment is labeled and paired with a visual example, which makes it easy to understand and remember. The wording is brief and straightforward, so it works well in busy healthcare settings as both a teaching tool and a quick reminder.
I agree, your explanation is clear. I like how you pointed out the simple visuals and brief wording, which makes it easy to remember and practical to use as a quick reminder during busy shifts.
There are SO many different posters that I have seen in practice and while searching, But this one is the one I’ve seen most and honestly i think its the best. The layout is easy to follow, and the written explanations on the bottom are what make it best. I feel like I’ve seen so many posters that don’t have any sort of explanation and really could be taken in different ways to different people. So this is very cut and dry!
For homecare, I chose Public Health Ontario’s “4 Moments for Hand Hygiene” poster because it clearly explains when to clean your hands and includes the often-missed “client environment” (touching surfaces and equipment in the home). It’s simple, point-of-care focused, and easy for staff to follow during short visits, which supports better compliance and safer care.

Hello everyone,
The reason why I chose this image is because the picture is explained simply with wording and pictures in which staff, vistors and residents can easily interpret. This particular image is used in my facility.
