Hello Everyone,
My name is Jen Calver and I will be your course facilitator. I am a Registered Practical Nurse, a research coordinator with WeRPN, and am currently pursuing my PhD. My research is focused on psychological health and safety workforce retention factors in long-term care. My background is primarily in long-term care. My interest in research developed during my undergraduate course as there was a notable gap in the literature about RPNs and by RPNs. As skilled and knowledgeable healthcare professionals it is important that we not only address this gap, but also learn how to critical appraise existing evidence to help inform our practice. For me, my focus was on older adults and supporting the people who care for them.
I will be with you throughout this course. I encourage you to post any course related questions to the discussion board – as others be may wondering the same thing as you. Of course, you can always email me at jcalver@werpn.com. This course will require dedicated time. Everyone’s learning journey is different, but I would account for a minimum of 5 to 10 hours per week. I do encourage you to have your activities and discussion posts completed by Sunday of each week. Although this is an asynchronous course (no scheduled time), it is designed for us to learn together as each one of us brings valuable knowledge and experiences to the table.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at any time. I look forward to joining you on this learning journey and spending these next 8 weeks together. In this first week we will learn about the fundamentals of research.
Wishing each of you all the best with your studies.
Jen C.

Hello everyone! My name is Rachel and I am currently a practical nursing student. I strive to have a deep understanding of all things pertaining to the nursing profession. I thought that if I really hone the skill of research, it would help me excel in my studies and profession after graduation. That is why I signed up for this course. I absolutely love learning and I love sharing my knowledge with others. This is a second career for me. I’ve always wanted to become a nurse but the timing wasn’t right until now. I am excited to pursue this dream I’ve had for many years. For fun, I perform stand-up comedy and I like to go on walks.
Hello Rachel,
Welcome to the Introduction to Research for RPNs course. We are happy to have you here. Once of the great things about this course is that it is designed so that we learn together and have a chance to share our own experiences and knowledge along the way.
Sounds like you are the person we should go to if we are in need of a laugh 🙂 Thank you for sharing.
Kindly,
Jen C.
Hello Rachel,
Greetings. Like you, I share a similar belief about research in terms of how it could bring about excellence in nursing. Sometimes I wonder, could understanding the foundations of research shed light on the building blocks of the evidence upon which the nursing profession is built? Could understanding the foundations of research bring about enlightenment of foundational nursing knowledge? Could this enable us build capacity in nursing to effectively navigate and champion healthcare in a very rapidly changing era? These questions and more are some of the reasons why like you, I am grateful to be enrolled in this course.
Looking forward to learning alongside you and others as well.
Cheers,
Oghenefegor U.
