Welcome to the end of week 3. Here you will post your completed learning activity and respond to 1-other learners’ post. Remember your response to your peers should be reflective. Avoid brief acknowledgements and agreements.

Activity 1: Carefully read and evaluate the article you selected from the list above. Complete the research tool and attach the document to the discussion board. Write 1 to 2 sentences about your experience or thoughts on using the tool

Hello everyone – Now that you have reviewed and considered various frameworks and theories that may help to address your research question you will begin to practice your critical appraisal of the literature. Critical appraisal is the process of carefully and systematically examining research evidence to judge its trustworthiness, its value and relevance in a particular context. It allows nurses to use research evidence reliably and efficiently and determine whether the research evidence is true (free of bias) and relevant to the people in their care. This is skill that nurse continue to build upon as part of their reflective practice.

On a different note – A question was sent to my email to inquire about working ahead on the modules. I do recommend that we follow the weekly trajectory as this course is designed for us to learn together. As nurses this provides a great opportunity to share our knowledge and experiences so that we can learn from one another as we journey through our introduction to nursing research. If you would like to work ahead on the TCPS modules you may upload your certificate and post in week 4 ahead of time, but try to follow the course timeline for the other learning modules and activities.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions.

      Kindly,

      Jen C

      Hello everyone,

This week had the content I’ve been waiting for! Critical appraisal of research is a very interesting process and is a skill I will continue honing throughout my career.

I am hoping I used the tool accurately and well– I found the tool helpful because research papers can sometimes feel overwhelming to absorb and this tool did a good job of highlighting the important parts of a research paper to help me determine if it is a good resource of information.

      Thanks!
      Rachel

        Hello Oghenefegor,

Thank you for your detailed research tool. I agree with you that being aware of accumulation of small changes is helpful to understand professional practice development and professionalism.

The findings about ‘invisible work’ also sounds very interesting. Thanks for sharing!

        Hello Oghenefegor,

I read your research tool and you did a good job with detail analysis of your article. Also this study was much needed to see the distinction between the two roles and how the roles apply in daily practice.

      Hello Oghenefegor,

You entered a lot of good information in your tool. I think next time I fill out a tool, I will consider adding more information as that may help me determine if the article is helpful for my research.

      Take care,
      Rachel

      Hello Maame,

Happy to hear that you found the research tool helpful.

Were you able to access the full article for reference? The abstract of articles are helpful to give an overview, but lack the detail related to the information. I have reached out to my colleague for the full text article.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience with palliative care and expectations of family members. The emotional aspects of this type of work are important to note. What resources would be helpful for nurses and families when in this situation?

      Hello Jen,

I wasn’t able to access the full article and also resources that will be beneficial for nurses would be open dialouge with management, workplace helplines and work training sessions. Resources for families I believe will be beneficial is speaking with the social worker, and also educational training sessions .
