Synopsis:
This presentation equips nurses with essential knowledge to identify, assess, and manage concussions effectively. It covers key signs and symptoms, the distinction between concussions and Persistent Post-Concussion Symptoms, and best practices for guiding patients through safe Return to Learn, Work, and Play protocols. We’ll also highlight the long-term impacts of brain injury and provide strategies for building a multidisciplinary care team to support patients and their families throughout recovery.
Speakers Bio
Tim Fleiszer is the first player in Canadian Football League history to win four Grey Cup championships with four different teams. Selected 1st overall in the 1998 CFL Draft, Tim was a team captain on three teams (Montreal, Ottawa and Edmonton) and a CFL Players Association representative for four years.
Throughout his ten-year career, Fleiszer was passionate about his involvement in community-building initiatives. He was twice nominated for the Tom Pate award, given to the CFL player who reflects outstanding community service.
Today, he continues to serve the community through his work as the Executive Director of the Concussion Legacy Foundation Canada and was recently awarded the Charles III Coronation Medal for having made a significant contribution to Canada.
A cum laude graduate of Harvard University (B.A. 98), Fleiszer was a Partner with Gil Scott Sports Management for more than a decade.
He has worked as a consultant for Xenith, Gravitas Financial, All-American Games, SportsLab NYC and STACK Media.
Tim resides in Montreal, Quebec, with his wife, Lori, and their three sons, Douglas, Solomon and Abraham.
He also works as a sports business consultant and a sports agent, as the Principal of Fleiszer Consulting Inc.
Dr. Samantha Bureau is a Canadian neuroscientist. Dr. Bureau is a neurodegenerative disease expert, known predominantly for her work investigating brain injuries and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. During her doctoral training, she specialized in the cellular and molecular medicine of neurodegenerative diseases, investigating therapeutic targets to alter disease progression. Throughout her academic and athletic career, Dr. Bureau has had a special interest in brain injuries and has published and edited journal articles, white papers, and books related to concussion and chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
Notably, she is the second author of the landmark paper,
Applying the Bradford Hill Criteria for Causation to Repetitive Head Impacts and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. This paper outlines evidence that CTE is caused by repetitive head impacts and served as the impetus for changing positions on CTE causation around the world, including at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Professional Footballers Association (PFA), the Football Association (FA), and the Australian Football League (AFL).
Dr. Bureau has vast experience working with and educating military personnel, previously presenting at NATO exercises, and to the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Legion, and various governments and government stakeholders around the world.
Dr. Bureau has worked at top-tier academic research institutions, including the Boston University CTE Center and the University of Ottawa Brain and Mind Research Institute. She currently serves as the Director of International Programs at the Concussion Legacy Foundatio,n where she oversees the foundation’s programs, international operations, and ongoing research initiatives and collaborations
