Choose a portion of your research project you wish to present on. For example, if you have not started your research project, you can write an abstract focusing on your clinical problem (Background), research question (Objectives), how you completed your literature search, search terms, etc (Methods), and your recommendations and research project plan (Conclusion).

Learning Activity 2 – Reflection on Writing for Professional Journals

The University of Utah modules on writing for professional journals provide a structured approach to transforming research and quality improvement projects into publishable manuscripts. Key steps highlighted include selecting an appropriate journal, understanding author guidelines, organizing content using standard headings (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion), and adhering to reporting standards such as CONSORT or PRISMA. The modules also emphasize the importance of clarity, concise writing, proper referencing, and ethical considerations in research dissemination.

Applying this to my research question—How does access to limited community resources impact patients’ discharge and readmission rates—the modules highlighted strategies to ensure that findings are presented in a compelling, evidence-based manner. For example, identifying a target journal that focuses on nursing practice, healthcare quality, or patient safety would allow the research to reach an audience who can implement practical changes. The step-by-step guidance on structuring the manuscript ensures that the problem statement, literature review, methodology, and findings are clearly communicated, enhancing the credibility and impact of the research.

Additionally, the modules encourage reflection on the broader significance of the study and framing findings in a way that guides future practice, policy, and research. For my topic, this could involve emphasizing the role of nurses in assessing community resource gaps, coordinating interdisciplinary care, and advocating for system-level changes to reduce preventable readmissions.

Overall, these modules reinforce the importance of careful planning, adherence to journal requirements, and clear communication to disseminate research effectively. They provide a valuable roadmap for translating the findings from my literature review into a manuscript that can contribute to both evidence-based nursing practice and improved patient outcomes.
