In the past I used CNO’s therapeutic communication document to guide my practice during my consolidation placement. I worked in an outpatient endoscopy clinic where patients were often anxious, scared and sometimes even angry. I had difficulty communicating with such clients as I did not know what was the right thing to say or how to deliver what I wanted to say. After reviewing the therapeutic communication document on CNO’s website and having a conversation with my preceptor I found that I was better able to communicate with clients.
The nine entry to practice competencies outlined for Registered Nurses help new graduates better understand scope of practice. For example, the role of communicator outlines ways to foster and maintain professional and therapeutic relationships, and adequately share relevant information. In my final placement, I was able to utilize active listening to better understand client preferences. Specifically, one client was particular about receiving their medication at set times daily. By actively listening to the client’s request, I was able to build a therapeutic, trusting relationship with the client.
CNO resources was utilized to support my learning when completing my post diploma to degree program assignments. For example, during clinical placements the CNO practice competencies of a RN were used to conduct midterm and final self evaluations (self reflection to determine how I was able to meet the competencies of the 9 roles with examples from clinical practice).
I have used CNO practice competencies throughout nursing school. I have also used the CNO website for jurisprudence exam
I used resources from the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) to support their practice by referring to the CNO’s Practice Standards when dealing with a new procedure or patient care issue. when I was tasked with administering a new class of medication, I refer to the CNO’s standards on medication administration or professional practice to ensure they are adhering to the most current guidelines. While on placement in a long-term care facility, one of the family members of a resident needed to be given access to a patient’s health info. This resource assisted me in understanding that personal health information should not be shared among individuals unless consented or legally allowed, like a substitute decision maker. This information made it easy for me to explain the policy to the family without compromising the rights of the resident and the professional obligation.
As a nursing student, I have used CNO resources because they provided me with accurate, current, and approved information from regulatory authorities that directly influences the quality of my education and future nursing practice, which will ensure that I provide high-quality patient care.
During my nursing education, I used the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) resources to support my learning on evidence-based practice. I accessed the CNA’s guidelines on professional standards, which helped me understand the importance of ethical decision-making in patient care. These resources were invaluable in guiding my approach to integrating research into practice, for example I used them to enhance care plans I developed for assignments, ensuring that my interventions were both evidence-based and aligned with professional standards.
Hello,
The CNO provides valuable resources that guide our practice and ensure we meet professional standards. One time I relied on CNO resources was when I was caring for a patient with dementia who was becoming increasingly agitated during care. I wanted to ensure I was providing safe, ethical, and patient-centered care while maintaining professional boundaries. I referred to the CNO’s Professional Standards, Revised 2002, particularly the sections on accountability, ethics, and continuing competence. This helped me reflect on my approach, ensuring I was using evidence-based interventions while also respecting the patient’s dignity and autonomy. Additionally, I reviewed the Practice Standard: Therapeutic Nurse-Client Relationship, which reinforced the importance of building trust and using effective communication strategies.
By applying these standards, I was able to adjust my approach, using calm reassurance and validation techniques, which ultimately helped reduce the patient’s distress. This experience reminded me how essential CNO resources are in guiding our decisions and ensuring we provide safe, competent, and compassionate care.
Thanks for reading my post!

I am studying BScN (Post PN). I have always referred to CNO resources in order to create learning goals, learning needs and learning plan for all the clinical placements. The 9 RN roles have helped me to understand different perspectives and the skills that I can develop and use to deliver excellent patient centered care.
Also, recently I was selected for quality Assurance Program from CNO. The CNO resources (video tutorial, FAQs, instructions and links to resources) regarding the QAP are very detailed and answered all the questions on how to complete the assessment. The examples and guidance provided by CNO were of great help to create my learning plan and practise reflection.
CNO Website is my lifetime resource not only this time but also in the future. I have been accessing numerous times this website with a lot of valuable resources. Especially when doing quality insurance assignments when I was doing my clinical experience. Reviewing best practices and roles of nurses. Now that I am a newly graduated from this profession, CNO outlines the steps that i need to follow including registration process and more.
During my PN studies, I often used resources from (CNO) to help me understand how to provide safe and professional care. For example, when working on an assignment about ethics in nursing, I used the CNO’s Ethics Practice Standard to learn how to apply ethical principles in real-life situations. I also looked at the Professional Standards to better understand things like accountability and putting the client at the center of care. These tools helped me think critically and make sure my assignments reflected what is expected in nursing practice. I also used CNO resources during my CPET, clinicals, and pre-grad placement to guide my decisions and support safe and ethical care.
During my clinical placement, I encountered a situation where I was unsure about the appropriate boundaries when a client began sharing deeply personal and emotional experiences with me. I wanted to be supportive without crossing any professional lines.
To guide my response, I turned to the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Practice Standard on Therapeutic Nurse-Client Relationship. This resource helped me understand the importance of maintaining professional boundaries while still providing empathetic, client-centred care. It clearly outlined what constitutes a boundary crossing and how to remain within the professional scope of practice.
By applying the CNO standards, I was able to actively listen and show compassion while redirecting the conversation in a respectful and professional manner. This not only protected the integrity of the therapeutic relationship but also reinforced my understanding of the nurse’s role in safeguarding both client and professional well-being.
This experience deepened my knowledge of ethical nursing practice and highlighted how CNO resources can be applied directly to complex, real-life situations.
During my clinical Placement, I always referred to CNO resources. also while in school I used resources for my case studies as well.
During my time in school i used the CNO resources as a guide for assignments and studying.
During my time in school i used the CNO resources as a guide for assignments and studying. It gave me a good understanding of the scope of practice of a RPN especially coming with the knowledge of a PSW.
I used the CNO resources throughout my education and practice. It allowed me to understand my scope as an RPN and now RN, while also guiding my practice. I used it as an outline for my learning goals to improve my practice and strengthen my education.
During my training and clinical placements, I followed the standards set by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) to guide my ethical decision-making and accountability. These professional standards helped me provide safe, supportive, and client-centered care.
An example of when I used College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) resources was during my time in nursing school. I regularly use the CNO website while working on my ethics and leadership assignments and also when developing my learning plan to better understand professional standards, scope of practice, and ethics. For my reflection assignments, I used it to guide my thinking and make sure my work matched what is expected in nursing practice.
Using CNO resources helped me to better understand my role as a future nurse. It helped me to see my strengths and showed the areas I needed to work on. It also got me used to checking reliable professional resources when I am unsure. I still use CNO resources in my practice now as an RN especially when I need guidance or clarification on an ethical issue.
I really liked your point about using the CNO resources during nursing school and continuing to use them in practice as an RN. I can relate to using the CNO website for assignments and reflections because it helps connect theory to real nursing practice. I also agree that the resources are very helpful for understanding professional standards, ethics, and the scope of practice. What stood out to me most was when you mentioned that using the CNO resources helped you recognize both your strengths and areas for improvement. I think that is such an important part of professional growth and lifelong learning in nursing. It is great that you continue to use these resources in practice, especially when facing ethical questions or needing clarification. This shows accountability and commitment to safe, evidence-informed care.
I remember being introduced to the CNO website and resources in one of my classes during my first semester of nursing school. For example, students were assigned to complete a group assignment, in which a component of the assignment was to refer to the CNO’s Code of Conduct practice standard and choose a principle that supported the group’s topic. Furthermore, I continued to refer to the CNO’s practice standards to complete many assignments throughout my time in nursing school and will continue to refer to them in my professional nursing practice.
Hi Melissa,
Thank you for sharing your experience. I agree with you that the CNO website and practice standards are very helpful for nursing students and nurses. I also remember using CNO resources during school assignments, especially when learning about the Code of Conduct and professional responsibilities.
In my practice area, long-term care, I find CNO resources very useful because residents often have complex care needs. Nurses must follow professional standards when providing medication, documenting care, communicating with families, and respecting residents’ rights and dignity. Reviewing CNO resources helps me feel more confident and reminds me to provide safe, ethical, and client-centred care.
Great post!
I have used the CNO website many times. I have used it to look up a nurse, to find myself and my registration number. I have used it to look up the core competencies, along with the practice standards. I have referenced the CNO in my studies, and referenced various resources and pages from the CNO in my papers. I have more recently been using the CNO website to register as an RN, and to further look into the differences between the classes, and practice differences.
Using CNO Resources in Long-Term Care Practice
I have used College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) resources to support my learning and practice, especially in long-term care. One example is when I reviewed the CNO practice standards and guidelines related to medication administration, documentation, professional accountability, and consent. In long-term care, residents often have complex needs, multiple medications, cognitive changes, and family involvement, so it is important to follow professional standards carefully.
CNO resources help me understand my role and responsibilities as a nurse. For example, when I am unsure about documentation, scope of practice, or professional boundaries, I can review the CNO website to make sure my actions are safe, ethical, and within nursing standards. I also find the CNO Code of Conduct helpful because it reminds nurses to provide respectful, client-centred, and culturally safe care.
Using CNO resources supports my confidence and helps me make safe decisions in practice. In long-term care, this is very important because nurses must advocate for residents, communicate with families and the health care team, and protect residents’ safety and dignity.
I have used the CNO resources on numerous occasions to ensure i’m following practice standards and understanding my scope and role as RPN but also now as an RN. In particular when completing the RPN and RN programs our learning plans were formatted similiar to the CNO’s quality assurance program, so I am very familiar with that process and how it helps inform reflection on clinical practice.
I used resources from the College of Nurses of Ontario website while registering for my RN license and during my transition into practice. During the registration process, I reviewed the CNO requirements and guidelines to better understand the documentation, jurisprudence, and practice expectations needed for RN licensure in Ontario.
I also used CNO practice standards to learn more about medication prescribing and delegation of tasks. I reviewed the guidelines to better understand nursing responsibilities, accountability, and the difference between assigning care and delegating controlled acts. These resources helped me strengthen my understanding of safe practice, professional standards, and the scope of practice, which supported my learning and increased my confidence in clinical decision-making
Throughout my journey in nursing school, I relied heavily on CNO resources to support reflective practice and reflections in general. For example, the practice guidelines served as guides that outlined what were expected of me in my nursing role and allowed me to identify and reflect on situations that either fell out of these expectations or were ethically challenging. I have come to learn that whenever in doubt, I can more than likely find a CNO resource to guide me to clarity.
I have used it throughout the BScN Program as a student, I relied on it during the development of care plans, during reflective practice as well as during in class discussions.
I used it throughtout my nursing school. It helped me find reliable information. It also helped me better understand professional nursing practice. I will continue using CNO resources to support me in my future career as an RPN nurse.
During clinical, I used the College of Nurses of Ontario Controlled Acts standard to clarify what RNs and RPNs are allowed to do independently versus what requires delegation or an order. I wasn’t fully clear on the differences around certain controlled acts like administering medications and performing specific procedures, so I reviewed the standard. It helped me understand my scope as a student and reinforced when to seek supervision or an order before carrying out a task.
During my clinical placement, I used the College of Nurses of Ontario resources to learn more about safe medication practice and documentation. The guidelines helped me improve my knowledge and confidence in providing safe patient care.
During my Practical Nursing program at Centennial College, I regularly used resources from the College of Nurses of Ontario to support both my learning and clinical practice. Throughout each semester, our instructors encouraged us to reflect on CNO standards, guidelines, and practice documents in our assignments, care plans, and weekly clinical reflections.
I also incorporated CNO resources into many of my academic papers and reflective assignments to support my understanding of therapeutic communication, confidentiality, and ethical nursing practice. This helped me develop professional judgment and become more confident in applying nursing standards in both classroom and in clinical settings.
During my nursing school clinical placements, I used the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) practice standards to guide my documentation and communication with patients and the healthcare team. In particular, I referred to the Professional Standards and Documentation Practice Standard when I was uncertain about what information should be included in patient charting and how to document objectively and professionally.
For example, during a mental health placement, I cared for a patient who became verbally aggressive and emotionally distressed. I wanted to ensure my documentation remained factual, non-judgmental, and within my scope as a student nurse. I reviewed the CNO documentation guidelines, which emphasized documenting observable behaviours, patient statements, nursing interventions, and the patient’s response to care. This helped me improve my charting and understand the importance of accurate documentation for continuity of care, patient safety, and legal accountability.
I have also used the CNO Entry-to-Practice Competencies to better understand the expectations of new graduate nurses and identify areas where I needed further growth, such as leadership, communication, and clinical judgment. Reviewing these competencies helped me reflect on my progress throughout my consolidation placement and prepare for transition into professional practice.
Using CNO resources has helped me become more confident in making safe, ethical, and evidence-informed nursing decisions.
During my clinical placements, I utilized the CNO’s practice guidelines and standards to guide my documentation. The guidelines was my go to when I needed clarification on what to do, important steps to take and how to complete certain tasks.
I also found it really helpful while reflecting about how my day went, what I think should have been done better and how to improve on specific areas.
I accessed the CNO website many times during my school assignments while reflecting on my practice standards and guidelines as an RPN.
I have utilized CNO resources multiple times as an RPN student and also as a bridging student while in school. I often had to comb through practice guidelines and standards to complete assignments in some nursing courses. More recently, at my job, we have used the Authorization Guidelines to review our policy on delegation and medical directives. At my last clinical placement, the CNO resources played a huge role in a recent policy review process.
I have used the CNO’s resources to support my learning on different occasions. While in school, it helped with my understanding of my scope of practice and also with my roles within the interprofessional team, it also helped during my placements and consolidation by being able to provide/maintain therapeutic relationship between my patients/residents in the provision of care.
